April 2005 - George Skelly returns to Korea
In April 1952, 53 years ago, George Skelly returned from the Korean War after serving 13 months with the 25th Canadian Infantry Brigade as part of the 1st Commonwealth Division. He was a Platoon Commander with the Princess Patricia's Canadian Light Infantry (PPCLI). Under the auspices of the Canadian Korea Veterans Association and the Korean Government a group of 30 veterans and some wives joined veterans from Australia, New Zealand and the United Kingdom for a Korea revisit. Visits and ceremonies were held in Busan (Pusan) at the Canadian Military Cemetery, the demarkation zone and the sites of the Battles of Kapyong and Gloucestershire Valley. In April 1951 the Gloucestershire Regiment was wiped out by the hoards of attacking Chinese. Two Victoria Crosses were earned at this battle. At the Battle of Kapyong the 28th Brigade with supporting American tanks and mortars held the line and checked the Chinese onslaught. The PPCLI and the Royal Australian Regiment (RAR) bore the brunt of the attack. For their heroic action the PPCLI and the RAR were awarded the American Presidential Unit Citation, the first and only time that this honour was presented to a foreign regiment. A formal dinner was held during the visit and the Korean Freedom Medal was presented to the veterans. Click to see George with medal
